The Great American West: Part 1

December 29, 2010

As of yesterday morning, we are on a 10-day roadtrip from Texas to California and back via the American West.
Day 1 started in Austin and ended in Alpine, TX with a celebratory dinner for some newly engaged friends that live there. Today we drove through El Paso with the dismal shanties of Juarez looming on the desert hillsides scattered out in the distance. We then proceeded north up the center of New Mexico. On a gas stop we pulled into Hatch (birthplace of the Hatch chile pepper); large bundles of chiles hung on rustic wooden porches. Dusk found us stopping for the night in Santa Fe near the hallowed Route 66 . We will be on and off it tomorrow as we make our way west. More to come shortly.
